How it works
Schematic · not to scale
From sample to a spectrum

Place the sample in a magnetic field.
Apply a radio-frequency pulse.
Record the response as a signal over time.
Transform the signal into a spectrum to interpret.
The signal and peaks are illustrative, not measured data. NMR is an extension beyond the required course treatment.
The lesson, in the real world
A chemical sample can produce a pattern we can interpret.
- 1
Place a suitable sample in the instrument’s magnetic field. NMR concerns the magnetic behaviour of particular atomic nuclei.
Our explanation - 2
A radiofrequency pulse changes the sample’s magnetization. The instrument records a time-varying signal.
Our explanation - 3
Processing converts the recorded signal into a spectrum. The pattern can provide information about chemical environments.
Our explanation - 4
Interpret the spectrum alongside reference information and sample conditions. A simplified pattern is not a photograph of a molecule or an automatic proof of identity.

Who does this work
Role
Instrument development and testing
Help build and check the equipment that produces measurements. Instrument work joins hardware, software and experiments rather than treating a reading as automatically correct.
What might you actually do?
Investigate
Check performance using a known reference.
Test and compare
Investigate drift, noise or inconsistent readings.
Explain and improve
Document tests so later users know what the instrument can establish.

Ask the class
What additional evidence would you want if two samples produced similar patterns?
Show two invented spectra with a shared peak and one different peak. Ask students what they can conclude, what they cannot conclude, and which reference measurement would help.
Mindset it shows
This is a pattern-and-evidence activity, not instruction in assigning real NMR spectra. Avoid describing the signal as X-rays or nuclear radiation.
