How it works

Schematic · not to scale

From sample to a spectrum

Conceptual sequence: Place the sample in a magnetic field. Apply a radio-frequency pulse. Record the response as a signal over time. Transform the signal into a spectrum to interpret.
  1. Place the sample in a magnetic field.

  2. Apply a radio-frequency pulse.

  3. Record the response as a signal over time.

  4. Transform the signal into a spectrum to interpret.

The signal and peaks are illustrative, not measured data. NMR is an extension beyond the required course treatment.

The lesson, in the real world

A chemical sample can produce a pattern we can interpret.

  1. 1

Place a suitable sample in the instrument’s magnetic field. NMR concerns the magnetic behaviour of particular atomic nuclei.

    Our explanation
  2. 2

A radiofrequency pulse changes the sample’s magnetization. The instrument records a time-varying signal.

    Our explanation
  3. 3

Processing converts the recorded signal into a spectrum. The pattern can provide information about chemical environments.

    Our explanation
  4. 4

Interpret the spectrum alongside reference information and sample conditions. A simplified pattern is not a photograph of a molecule or an automatic proof of identity.

Roles connected to this example

What each kind of work involves, the job titles to look for, and where to find postings in Calgary.

  • Instrument development and testing

Help build and check the equipment that produces measurements. Instrument work joins hardware, software and experiments rather than treating a reading as automatically correct.

    Classroom connection
Measurement uncertainty is part of using a tool responsibly.

    Job titles to search
    Test engineer · Electronics technologist

Related work · The company develops and manufactures instruments; these are related work areas, not verified titles.
  • Scientific applications

Connect an instrument to the question a user needs to answer. Applications work involves selecting a method, interpreting results and explaining limitations.

    Classroom connection
A pattern is evidence to interpret, not a label that proves an answer by itself.

    Job titles to search
Applications scientist · Field applications specialist

Work area · Application support is connected to the company’s instrument uses; duties below are editorial.
  • Software and data systems

Build the tools that move, process and display information. Reliable software needs testing against missing, delayed and unexpected data as well as ideal examples.

    Classroom connection
An algorithm’s output depends on the quality and meaning of its inputs.

    Job titles to search
    Software developer · Data engineer

Related work · Converting and displaying measurements requires data tools; the role link is interpreted, not a claim of an open position.

Cards distinguish work documented at Nanalysis from related work at other employers. Dated accounts and postings are not a current staff roster or a promise of a vacancy.

Ask the class

What additional evidence would you want if two samples produced similar patterns?

Show two invented spectra with a shared peak and one different peak. Ask students what they can conclude, what they cannot conclude, and which reference measurement would help.

Mindset it shows

This is a pattern-and-evidence activity, not instruction in assigning real NMR spectra. Avoid describing the signal as X-rays or nuclear radiation.
