How can passenger aircraft help us understand the atmosphere?

FTG Aerospace Calgary (formerly FLYHT) · FTG Aerospace Calgary address and aircraft-data/software work. Sensor observations are collected along flight routes, not only over Calgary.

From aircraft observations to weather information

Conceptual sequence: Aircraft travel through different atmospheric conditions. Sensors collect observations along the route. Communication systems deliver data to the ground. Meteorologists combine observations with other evidence and models.

  1. Aircraft travel through different atmospheric conditions.

  2. Sensors collect observations along the route.

  3. Communication systems deliver data to the ground.

  4. Meteorologists combine observations with other evidence and models.

Sensor capability depends on the installed system. Flight paths leave gaps; the map is illustrative, not a forecast.

The lesson, in the real world

An aircraft can carry measurements as well as passengers.

  1. 1

An aircraft moves through changing atmospheric conditions, so a measurement needs a time, position and altitude to be meaningful.

    Our explanation
  2. 2

The company describes weather observations from aircraft-mounted systems. The variables available depend on which system is used.

    Our explanation
  3. 3

Communications and software move observations into tools for users. Reliability includes handling missing or delayed data.

    Our explanation
  4. 4

Observations along flight routes can add evidence, but they do not sample every place equally. Coverage and instrument differences matter to interpretation.

Ask the class

Use it in class

Ask the class

How would a map of scheduled flights affect the weather observations available?

Give students a fictional route map with three aircraft tracks. Ask where observations would be concentrated and which regions would still need another source of measurement.

Mindset it shows

More observations are not the same as uniform coverage. Do not say all aircraft or all company systems measure humidity; the source distinguishes TAMDAR from AMDAR-over-AFIRS.
